Bwari, Abuja – As preparations for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) intensify, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has reiterated that its Computer-Based Test (CBT) is not conducted via the internet.
JAMB’s registrar, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, made this clarification while addressing the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) during a courtesy visit to his office in Bwari, Abuja. The board emphasized that contrary to widespread belief, the UTME operates on a Local Area Network (LAN), not an internet-based system.

JAMB Uses Local Area Network (LAN), Not Internet-Based System
In a statement published in JAMB’s weekly bulletin and obtained by Legit.ng on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, Oloyede addressed concerns that connectivity issues sometimes lead to glitches during examinations. He explained that JAMB’s LAN-based system allows data to be encrypted and securely transmitted to examination centers without dependence on external internet connections.
“The board uses the Local Area Network (LAN), which facilitates data distribution and network sharing within a limited area. These data are encrypted with other safety measures before they become accessible on candidates’ computer terminals,” Oloyede stated.
He further clarified that unlike WAEC and NECO, which are school-based, UTME registration is independent of schools, and students are required to complete their registration individually at accredited centers.
Key Takeaways from JAMB’s Statement
- UTME 2025 is not conducted on the internet but through a LAN-based computer system.
- Network glitches are not caused by poor internet connectivity but rather local system issues.
- UTME registration is not school-based, unlike WAEC and NECO.
- JAMB ensures encrypted and secure data transmission for examination integrity.
Why This Clarification Matters

JAMB’s clarification is crucial in dispelling myths about the examination process. Many candidates and parents assume that slow internet speed is responsible for technical difficulties during UTME. However, the use of LAN ensures that external internet disruptions do not affect the exam process.
JAMB continues to enhance security and efficiency in conducting the UTME, ensuring that candidates experience seamless testing in their respective centers.
