The University of Abuja has firmly denied allegations of favoritism in its ongoing Vice Chancellor selection process. According to Legit.ng, reports of bias and irregularities emerged following the end of Prof. Abdulrasheed Na’Allah’s tenure on July 1, 2024. However, the university has reassured stakeholders of its commitment to transparency and fairness in appointing its next Vice Chancellor.

Allegations of Bias in the Selection Process

Some senior professors at the institution alleged irregularities in the Vice Chancellor selection process. They accused the administration of attempting to impose the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Aisha Maikudi, as the next leader, claiming the process lacked transparency. Concerns were also raised about reports of protests and alleged harassment of journalists.

University’s Response

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Habib Yakoob, the university dismissed the allegations. Yakoob stated:

These reports, which include claims of imposing a candidate—specifically the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi—as well as allegations of journalist harassment and protests by some professors, are misleading and exaggerated.”

He further highlighted Prof. Maikudi’s accomplishments during her tenure as Acting Vice Chancellor, saying:

In fact, her remarkable accomplishments during this period have garnered widespread applause and commendation within and beyond the University.

The statement reassured the public that the selection process is being conducted fairly and in line with best practices.
