Why Did Tinubu Order the Takeover?
This decision follows a Federal High Court ruling in Abuja, which ordered the permanent forfeiture of the privately-owned university to the Federal Government. According to Vice President Shettima, the transformation of the university is aimed at boosting education and infrastructure development in Southern Kaduna. He described the move as a fulfillment of the government’s commitment to fostering regional growth.
A Milestone for Higher Education in Nigeria
Vice President Shettima emphasized the administration’s commitment to advancing educational opportunities and inclusivity. During the formal handover ceremony at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, he stated:
“This is a historic moment for our nation and for Kaduna State. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision for inclusivity and educational advancement is evident through this remarkable achievement.”
He further commended individuals who played pivotal roles in the university’s transition, mentioning General Martin Luther Agwai (retd.), Bishop Matthew Kukah, Justice Kumai Akaahs, and Senator Sunday Marshall for their contributions to peace and development in the region.
University to Be Included in Federal Budget
Shettima also announced that directives had been issued to the Minister of Education to ensure that the university is included in the 2025 federal budget. This financial provision is expected to facilitate the smooth operation and expansion of the institution.
EFCC’s Role in the University’s Takeover
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) played a crucial role in the university’s conversion, as the institution’s property and assets were handed over to the Federal Government. EFCC Chairman Ola Olukayode confirmed that the final forfeiture judgment covered several assets, including:
- Academic buildings
- A water factory
- An international hotel
- An event centre
These facilities will now serve as part of the newly established Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia.
Kaduna Leaders React to the Development
The decision to federalize the university has been met with widespread approval from Kaduna State leaders.
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, expressed deep gratitude to President Tinubu, stating that the move would have a significant impact on the state’s educational and socio-economic development.
Senator Sunday Marshall Katung, who represents the Kaduna South Senatorial District, also praised the decision, calling it “transformative.” He noted:
“This institution will not only provide access to quality education but also stimulate local economic growth and enhance the cultural fabric of our community.”
A New Dawn for Southern Kaduna
Vice President Shettima reiterated that beyond educational development, the Federal Government is committed to infrastructure growth in Southern Kaduna, particularly in road construction and regional connectivity. This initiative aligns with the administration’s broader plans for national development.
