Microsoft has unveiled an ambitious plan to train one million Nigerians in Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills over the next two years. This initiative, backed by a $1 million investment, aims to drive digital transformation, foster innovation, and enhance economic opportunities for Nigerians.
Microsoft Launches AI Tour in Lagos
During the Microsoft AI Tour launch in Lagos, Microsoft’s Country Manager for Nigeria, Ola Williams, emphasized the significance of this strategic investment.
“This is a strategic investment to ensure that Nigerians have access to the critical skills needed not just to use AI but to develop cutting-edge solutions and build AI-driven businesses that provide sustainable livelihoods,” Williams stated.
This initiative will equip Nigerians with the technical expertise required to compete in the global AI ecosystem, positioning the country as a key player in AI-driven entrepreneurship and economic competitiveness.
A Milestone in Nigeria’s AI Development
Williams described the initiative as a “historic moment”, highlighting the presence of Microsoft’s African leadership as a testament to the importance of the program.
“Their presence underscores the importance of this initiative and reflects our leaders’ level of commitment. It also demonstrates Microsoft’s confidence in Nigeria and AI’s potential to transform lives, businesses, startups, and enterprises,” she added.
The training program will cater to business leaders, developers, young professionals, and government officials, ensuring widespread AI adoption and accessibility. Microsoft also pledged ongoing partnerships with stakeholders to maintain accessibility for all interested individuals.

Lillian Barnard, President of Microsoft Africa, shared her enthusiasm about AI expansion in Nigeria, stressing Africa’s importance in the AI revolution.
“I am personally excited about bringing AI to Nigeria. We’ve seen AI adoption growing globally, but it’s critical to focus on Africa, which is my area of responsibility. Our key markets—Nigeria, South Africa, Egypt, and Kenya—are central to this effort,” Barnard stated.
Microsoft has been active in Africa for over 30 years, but only recently unified its African operations under a single leadership team. Barnard described this move as a “super significant” step in aligning Africa’s AI strategy with Microsoft’s global mission of empowering individuals and organizations through technology.
Microsoft’s Vision for AI in Nigeria

Barnard noted that Africa’s participation in previous industrial revolutions was limited, but the Fifth Industrial Revolution—driven by AI—offers a chance to accelerate progress.
“Our vision for Africa is centered on driving inclusive, sustainable economic growth by leveraging Microsoft’s technology to create new opportunities. During the Fourth Industrial Revolution and the digital transformation era, Africa participated, but not in a bold way. Now, with the Fifth Industrial Revolution—centered on AI—we see a chance to accelerate our progress,” she added.
Microsoft’s commitment extends beyond training to include infrastructure investments and industry collaborations, particularly in Nigeria’s financial services sector. The company is already engaging with banks and other industry leaders to integrate AI into various sectors.
Addressing Africa’s AI Talent Gap
As part of its AI expansion strategy, Microsoft has launched similar AI skilling programs in South Africa. The company is shifting focus from basic digital literacy to advanced AI skills, recognizing the rising demand for AI professionals.
“Now, our skilling efforts are centered on AI, given the rising demand for AI-related jobs. Many of these positions remain unfilled due to a lack of skilled professionals, and it is crucial that we equip Africa’s youth with the right tools to seize these opportunities,” Barnard explained.
