The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has made headlines yet again, addressing its delayed decision on a nationwide indefinite strike. Despite months of unresolved grievances, ASUU has opted to give the Federal Government more time to respond to its demands. Why ASUU Is Delaying the Nationwide Strike
In an exclusive interview with the Nigerian Tribune, ASUU President, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, explained the rationale behind the union’s patience. He stated that ASUU deliberately postponed the proposed strike to provide the Federal Government ample time to resolve long-standing issues.
“But up till now, several months after, the government has not done anything concrete as regards all our issues,” Osodeke lamented. “We are still on the same old narrative, and as a union, it is time for us to take action on our proposed strike. That will be early January if the government still refuses to do the needful by then.”

Growing Frustration Among Lecturers
ASUU members nationwide are reportedly frustrated with the Federal Government’s inaction. During the union’s last general meeting in November, members reluctantly agreed to extend the grace period until the end of December.
“When we met in November, the leadership had to plead with members to allow the government to use the months of November and December to address our concerns, thinking it would have done so by now,” said Professor Osodeke. “But here we are, still telling the same old story. So, now we are going to reconvene our meeting early January and take a decisive direction immediately if nothing is done by then.”

The union leader further shared updates regarding negotiations with the Federal Government’s renegotiation committee. According to Osodeke, ASUU concluded discussions with the committee weeks ago but has yet to receive any feedback.
